If your body is taking in more calories of any type (doesn't matter) than it can burn, it stores them as fat. Fat cells NEVER go away; you can only make them smaller. That may be the effect you're feeling. Once we put on weight, it's far harder to take it off, mega dittos when you reach your forties (like me) and your metabolism is significantly reduced.
Not meaning to be discouraging. It just takes more work, that's all.
