Although I never took it for depression, my pdoc once thought that it could help some chronic tooth pain I had. This was back around 1989. He never said anything about a potential interaction with the super-potent benzodiazepine Halcion, which is a hypnotic. I took .5 mg. Halcion to help me sleep, after I had taken some Elavil. Then I had the most frightening drug interaction I ever had, which he said was a cholinergic (?) crisis. Whatever it was, I'll never forget: don't take Halcion with Elavil, and be sure to ask your pdoc if any other benzo drugs are OK with it.
