Depakote and Lamictal

Posted by lauram on February 2, 2004, at 18:46:12

Six months ago I was hospitalized for an agitated manic episode three months in duration. I was put on Depakote 1250 mg each day and noticed an immediate relief of symptoms. I've been on this med for six months. However I did have side effects that included hair loss and body tremor. My Pdoc suggested I switch to Lamictal. I've been slowly titrating upwards while decreasing my Depakote. I have not had any return of the agitated mania that I had six months ago.

My question is this. Has anyone on these meds had trouble finding the right words to form a sentence? I find myself not being able to clearly speak words that have more than three syllables.
My job entails frequent communication with MD's and I have a lot of anxiety concerning this.

Hopefully when I am off the Depakote and just on the Lamictal this problem will resolve itself. I've also found that I have memory problems and find things in places I don't remember putting them. The memory is more short term than long term. I will stay on meds as I never want to go through what I did, wanting to run my car into a tree just to make those feelings go away. I am on the right track and plan to stay there.
