In reply to new to welbutrin, stopping paxil, posted by faith97229 on January 28, 2004, at 5:18:57
Hi Faith,
In my experience a g.p. is horrible at prescribing meds, I strongly encourage you to find a psychiatrist. (Especially since you are in the middle of switching meds - a good pdoc can help you make a very smooth transition from one med to another.)
I've been considering going on Welbutrin, but some of my research indicates that it can actually cause anxiety in some people. The same is said about Prozac. If you didn't experience much anxiety on Prozac, you might not have a difficult time on Wellbutrin. However, you might consider keeping a low dose of Paxil or some other anti-anxiety med in your drug cocktail. (I've found Lexapro to be wonderful for anxiety, and I know several people who combine it with Welbutrin.)
You might want to ask your pdoc about taking an anti-anxiety med on an as needed basis. That way, if you're off Paxil and do have an anxiety attack you'll be able to take care of it. Lorazepam, Xanax and Klonopin are good meds to have in that kind of situation.
Weaning off meds can be tricky. I suggest you don't go off of Paxil entirely until you talk to a pdoc. (I've had my own share of bad experiences with g.p's giving bad med advice and wouldn't wish that on anyone.)
I hope some of this information is helpful. Good luck!
K.
