I think no one really know how this drugs work.
The drugs called trcyclics (because of its chemical structure) like imipramine just work better for people, but have much more side effects than the new drugs have. Most SSRIs work on just one (called 5-HT(1A)) of around 14 different serotonin receptores. They dont do much else in your brain. At least of what is known today.
Imipramine works on all 14 Serotonin receptors. Scientist believe that just the 1A receptor is responsilble for antidepressive/antianxiety response. But this might be wrong IMO. And yes it also works on norepinephrin and many other sites in the brain. Blocks Histamine, blocks Acetylcholine, blocks noradrenaline alpha 1 + 2 which modulates function of other neurotenasmitter systems. Maybe altogehter is necessary to "bend" your brain the right way, while celexa alone doesnt.This is a short post to explain this, but thats all my poor brain can produce these days ;)
