> DonnaHi...
I have heard of and seen (and experienced) some excellent results with a small dose of an older, typical antipsychotic. I take Thioridazine (Mellaril) 25 mg's 2 x a day, with my Prozac, and man it works 100 x's better than Zyprexa, and doesn't seem to have the weight gain. (Plus it is so much, much cheaper!) Others on here have used Chlorpromazine (Largactil) and Perphenazine (Trilafon). Low dose seems to be the way to go with these, and they seem to be greatly underused (likely to 'coup' Atypical med drug profits.) These older, typical meds also don't seem to be associated with the diabetes and particular weight problems of atypicals.
I found these meds to be a far, far better med than any mood stabilizer, and I am BP2, Rapid Cycler. I find my activating Prozac dose (60 mg's) is nicely "calmed" by my Mellaril dose. You should also *seriously* look at adding a few other meds with these, including a benzo like clonazepam, and some T3 Thyroid Hormone to help with getting some of the weight loss (and feeling a bit more energetic) also. It works really well in Winter, and seems to make one less sensitive to cold. These are all fairly standard meds for the condition, and with optimal dose, you may even find yourself *transformed*, feeling better about yourself, etc. Most importantly, you will feel "in control".
Best wishes,
Jay
