Mmmm, tough one.
Only thing I can think about that might help is a walking meditation when you are out - it kinda feels to me like there is an anxiety hiding there, and it is coming out in this breathing obsession.
Here is how you can do a walking meditation, first walk deliberately, using an empty step, like you were walking on ice. Don't transfer the weight to the forward leg till it is resting, lightly on the ground in front of you. Then pay attention to the body shifting its weight to the forward leg. The legs should be slightly bent and the knees shouldn't lock.
The second thing is to breathe from your heels: use your belly to gather in air, it will go out when you are inhaling, and go in when you exhale.
This moves the diaphram at the bottom of the lungs, and fills the lungs in a different way.
It also kicks in the relaxation response, so that might help, too.
Hope this helps you, tho it obviously is not a med. Camomile tea, just before you go out might be of assistance, too. And that is a med - I use it to keep panic attacks down. Make a little ritual of it, kind of a set and setting thing!
Let me know if it is helpful. Thanks.
