Lithium - myth or fact

Posted by Maxime on January 15, 2004, at 10:08:38

Hello I have a question re. Lithium.

Someone on a an online support group I am on is bipolar. She is having trouble with mania. I asked her why she wasn't on lithium and she said she had enough lithium in her body and that wasn't the problem.

Now she didn't mean that she was on lithium and that her levels were at the therapeutic dose, she meant that there is enough lithium in her brain. When I asked her about this she said that lithium is a natural ocurring salt in the brain and one of the tests to see if you are bipolar is to do a lithium test.

????????

I have NEVER hear heard of this. Never. Is it true? Do we have lithium in our brains and can the levels be measured?

I don't understand. Can someone explain it to me. Am I really stupid?

Maxime
