Is your doctor anti-benzo or just anti-Xanax? I find Klonopin (clonazepam) great for anxiety, and a real plus with it is that many people do well at the some dose for years. It has little abuse potential, so even some "benzo-cautious" doctors will prescribe it.
If you have had a problem with benzos, though, I'd be extra careful with it (although it appears to be much safer than Xanax).
