Smell varies from brand to brand, but generally is not too bad. There are two fatty acids in fish oil that are crucial to brain membrane function, they are EPA and DHA. Fish oil and marine sources are the best as plant sources of omega 3's need to be converted by the body to their useable form of DHA and EPA. Omega 3's also exert some mood stabalizing properties due to their ability to protect cell integrity.
Generally the dose varies of about 900 mg of EPA and DHA together (what is normally found in 3 grams of standardized fish oil) to double or tripple this. Some studies have found EPA to be the more potent antidepressant and recomend doses of around 1 gram of EPA (around 6 g or standarzied fish oil). This is something that can be taken for a lifetime or for as long as you want. It is likely to exert its full benefit over a few months to a year, as the north american diet is typically depleated of these nutirients and the brain can become quickly starved.
Omega 3's also prevent the likelyhood of suddent death from heart attack, due to their ability to reduce inflamation and thin the blood.
