What are you being prescribed Tenormin for? Anxiety?
Tenorimin, aka atenolol, is a beta blocker used to treat high blood pressure and irregular heartbeats. It works by blocking the receptor sites in your cardiovascular system that can be stimulated by norepinephrine and epinephrine (adrenalin). Thus it interupts the "fight or flight" response that is triggered when you're under stress. It has a mild calming effect on most people, and can derail a full blown panic attack by inhibiting the fight or flight cycle that initiates the anxiety attack. It has been used for many years to treat cardiovascular problems and is very safe. It's one of the most common drugs sold--probably in the top 20.
One thing you will notice is it lowers your heart rate as well as your blood pressure. Atenolol enhances the efficieny of your heart--coronary ateries are dialated, your heart beats slower but with greater ouput. You may notice a little dizziness when you stand up quickly, but this is something that you will get used to very quickly.
It's definitely worth a trying if you are having panic attacks. Make sure your MD writes the presciption for the generic version (atenolol), because it is very inexpensive.
