Where did you find the original article? I'd like to look it up to get citations to the articles mentioned.
What interested me, in particular, is Michael Davis' work with the NMDA-agonist (enhancer) D-cycloserine. I hadn't heard before that NMDA-underfunction in the amygdala was implicated in fear-extinction. Though NMDA-channels are very widely distributed in the brain, and surely do lots of things, so it wouldn't suprise me.
I have learned about NMDA-underfunction before in the context of schizophrenia research. There is some evidence that NMDA-underfunction may be partially responsible for certain schizophrenia symptoms, and thus looking for NMDA-enhancers might be a good place to look for new schizophrenia drugs. I have been told by other neuroscientists that it can be really hard to find something to make NMDA work better (though its very easy to find something to make it work worse), so I was curious to hear that the emory lab is using D-cycloserine. I'd like to check it out.
