Have lived in both US and UK for very long periods. Have had dangerously bad psychiatrists in BOTH countries. The handful of good ones have all been in the UK. I'm sure there are some good ones in the USA too, but I never saw them--and I've seen plenty. My opinion is that psychiatry needs to be more aligned with neurology and also needs to make clear to the world that jobs in this field aren't mostly about being a police force in medical costumes.
The worst experiences have come to me via mental health professionals who regard their patients as social misfits/deviants instead of people with a medical problem they didn't ask for. They use humiliation, massive oversedation, ridicule, arrogance, power games---and seem to feel the psychaitric ward is just another version of jail.
What really grinds me up about this is if they sincerely believe we are wasting their time, why do they stay in these jobs? What sort of strange being would qualify to be a mental health nurse/doctor and then go round belittling the very people that make up their patient group?
If they think we're all fakers, malingerers, people with personality problems but no illness, why don't they haul ass and practice medicine in a field they consider is legit? I've had it with mental health workers who don't even believe in the basic tenets of their own profession. It's obscene, anyone in those jobs who keeps looking their nose down on their patients should be fired. Immediately. OUT.
