I took Klonopin for my panic attacks, first on a maintenance dose, then slowly reducing the dosage as I learned Cognitive Behavioral techniques. I have not needed a Klonopin since (although I do keep them around for anxiety/sleep problems). My panic attacks came "out of the blue" and were fierce and intense. I was agoraphobic for 2 years before I knew what was happening to me. By the grace of God I was referred to a Phobia center (check to see if there is one in your area) and through weekly therapy with a CB therapist, I learned the cognitive techniques to change the way I thought about the attacks, and what thinking leads up to them.
Anyhoo, just my 2 cents. Also, the book "Feeling Good" by David Burns is my "bible" and got me through many a tough time.
