MAO-A and MAO-B are products of genes found on the X chromosome (see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/dispomim.cgi?id=309850 ); they both consist of a number of amino acids. Ribosomes are responsible for synthesizing MAO-A and MAO-B. A single amino acid determines their substrate and inhibitor specificites (see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?holding=npg&cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=11134050&dopt=Abstract ).
