I believe I've read where the UK only diagnoses about 10% (per capita) of cases of ADHD or ADD that U.S. shrinks do in children. While I most definitely have seen symptoms first hand in children, the fact remains that our schools don't have the manpower to handle children with these symptoms and therefore insist they be given drugs. As a parent of a child with a rather severe anxiety disorder, my approach has been using a therapist to learn behaviors to cope with his symptoms rather than the drugs that I take. My own psychiatrist has said that the outlook for children treated this way is much better then medicating them. I understand how difficult it is to work with a child who can't settle down (or other symptoms) and again how difficult a decision it is to use drugs or not. I would hope you can get a second opinion and perhaps speak to a psychologist on alternative treatments.
I wish you all the best- judy
