Can pdocs prescribe Subutex/Suboxone?

I thought I read somewhere that a physician had to have a second DEA number which allowed them to prescribe drugs approved for opiate withdrawal/maintenance therapy... is there any truth to this? What if the drug is being prescribed for a purpose other than opioid addiction?
