I think you're describing hypnagogic hallucinations. I get them too, even when I'm not on any meds. Usually I'm very tired and stressed-out and just lying down. They're wild; very real.
"Visual [hypnagogic] hallucinations have been described as a 'film running through the head' or as a waking dream with strong emotional content. Images can be intrusive. More commonly they may involve seeing colored forms that shift in size and shape." Some people hallucinate sounds & touch, too.
