In reply to effexor and bipolar DON'T MIX!!!, posted by jamm on September 1, 2003, at 0:28:25

I was on Effexor and it worked great for my depression because of just that-it made me manic!!! Too manic and I can't take it anymore. Are you bipolar? The manufacturers of the drug state right in the leaflet 'may cause mania in persons who are bipolar' It sounds like the doc who prescribed your Effexor didn't know this AND if he/she knew you were anxious to begin with-why would Effexor been given. Something like Paxil or Lexapro-meds that have been proven to help anxiety would have been a better choice, in my opinion. I am really sorry that you had to go through that! I hope you find a medication that helps you:-)

> hi, just wanted to ask some questions about effexor xr. i had to get off of the effexor when i became pregnant. i was on the 75 mg per day and went cold turkey. at one point i was yelling at my husband and sister to "commit me." i was completely out of it-the "brain-zapps", emotional roller coaster, etc... i sometimes marvel at how my pregnancy went normal. anyway, it wasn't until i was completely effexor free that i realized how truly manic i had become on the effexor. my primary physician had placed me on the effexor after my second child because i had some bad anxiety that was exacerbated by post partum depression. has anyone else had similar problems using this drug???
