It is likely that neurotoxicity from any form of mania occurs only when prolonged and/or excessive. There is evidence that brain dammage occurs in bipolars (in manic state) with or without antidepressants.
But if the antidepressant put you in a manic state this is no good as well.
If you feel a drug is making you manic, there is good reason to discontinue it or reduce the dose.
Keep in mind that the other side can also cause brain dammage. Prolonged exposure to cortisol can cause hippocampal shrinkage.
It is important to know that this dammage is the result of extended exposure to either state. It's not really necessary to worry if the occurances are breif.ALso remember there are lots of things that counteract glutamate neurotoxicity. Vitamin E
Magnesium, Lithium, Selenium, Quercetin, Exercise (by increasing BDNF), vitamin C, mood stabalizers and tranquizers etc.Keep in mind that antidepressants (if not making you manic) can upregulate growth factors, and have been shown to grow new brain cells.
