In an article by distinguished MIBS (Minimally Invasive Brain Stimulation) research Dr. Mark George, he describes the VNS implant as having only "modest" effectiveness for depression. The article can be found in the September 2003 issue of Scientific American, a well respected and credible science magazine.
While VNS is effective for controlling refractory epilepsy, it doesnt appear to be effective for controlling refractory depression. Sounds like all the hype was just that...hype. For now, ECT is the only clinically effective treatment for severe depression.
