In reply to opiates for depression?, posted by pink123 on August 19, 2003, at 20:30:23
I've never had a problem with opiates, but I do find occasional use mood-lifting, almost like a "reset" when I'm down. I've had a couple of instances in the last few years involving tooth problems or muscle strain for which I've been prescribed Vicoprophen (like Vicodin, except it's ibuprophen + hydrocodone, because I've never been able to tolerate acetominophen due to stomach upset).
I definitely find that Vicoprophen improves my mood, even at a purely therapeutic dose. And, the effects seem to last a couple of days. I've actually thought of asking my pdoc for a small prescription, but somehow I doubt he'd go for it. Who knows, though -- I may ask on my next visit. I expect he'll just smile and say, yes, I know it works, but it's too risky to prescribe. He's very open-minded, but also alert to the often-excessive constraints imposed by the FDA (+/or DEA). At least he's honest about these things.
