I have been taking Provigil(modafinil) 200mg once a day, for a few months with great results, I was very surprised by it's wakefulness promoting effects. I thought that by adding Wellbutrin SR(bupropion HCL)100mg once a day, I would achieve the perfect balance of alertness, cognitive performance, memory recall, and antidepressant effects of both drugs synergistically. The reason I chose bupropion, was to add some non-stimulant dopaminergic action into the mix. I have taken Wellbutrin SR 150mg bid with great success for years, and it was my thought that adding it to the modafinil would create nothing less than a wonderdrug, at least for me.
Unfortunately after ~3 weeks it actually seems that the two negate each other. Why is this? My thoughts are that there is just not enough known information about the mechanisms of action relating to either of the substances. Does anyone really know how modafinil works? the prescribing information will tell you every possible way that it does NOT work, except for the fact that it has weak affinity to the DA transporter (in vitro), and bupropion is a weak inhibitor of neuronal uptake of Dopamine. But when used alone, there is nothing weak about the effects of either of the two substances. Put them together, and it feels as if there is an inhibitory, or even a negating effect on each other.
I am very confused about this, has anyone else experienced results such as this, or may know why; when taken concomitantly there is a marked negation in effects of both substances.
Sorry for such a long babble, I will do my best to answer any questions....
