Found L-Tryptophan in store...is it helpful?

Although I thought it was by prescription only, a local health food store carries L-Tryptopan. It is 40 dollars for 60 500milligram capsules. Has anyone had any luck using it for anxiety, depression, or Bipolar II? Will it make me gain weight or feel hungry all the time?
