Hi John.
I'm not sure anyone knows precisely how any antidepressant works, but duloxetine is a potent serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). In this respect, it is similar to Effexor. Duloxetine is considered to be a "dual action" drug.
