Sounds like panic attacks to me (not uncommon) -- I'd try to find a psychiatrist who specializes in (or at least understands) anxiety disorders. It's amazing what relief the right medications can provide. My vote is for Klonopin and/or Xanax (based on personal experience; I haven't tried Nardil, and although it may well be great, there are some special dietary precautions attached to it).
If they try to give you SSRIs like Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa/Lexapro, Paxil, or related meds like Effexor, insist on trying a very low dose first -- doctors tend to push these "new" antidepressants for anxiety (and they work very well for some people) but for nervous types like me they can also make the anxiety worse. Just be aware of this, and increase the dosage of these kinds of meds very carefully until you know how you react.
Good luck!
