I take Glucophage XR, as well, for prevention of diabetes. I only lose weight on it if I am exercising regularly. Otherwise, it does keep me from gaining weight, where otherwise, my meds and my sedentary lifestyle and what I eat would lead to weight gain.
It is a pretty hefty med, and I wouldn't think it would be prescribed primarily for weight loss. But if you are at risk for diabetes, perhaps that is why your doc prescribed it. Mine was prescribed by the endocrinologist after an oral glucose tolerance test.
I haven't had any of the SEs you describe, so I guess I am lucky. I don't know what to tell you.
I do think that my meds added to my weight gain, especially around the waistline, whereas in the past I had a relatively narrow waist and most of my weight was in the hips and thighs. They say that fat around the middle is associated with diabetes risk. From what I understand, the fat around the waistline tends to store hormones, which then leads to insulin resistance, which is what adds to the risk of diabetes.
All I can say is talk to your doctor. If the metformin was prescribed by a doctor who you don't feel can address the concerns, then consult a diabetes specialist (endocrinologist).
