How is it that a store here sells L-tryptophan?

I went to my local health food store yesterday to pick up a few things, and was surprised to see that they sold large bottles of L-tryptophan for $39.95. Is this legal? Has the ban been lifted? Most importantly, do you think the stuff is safe? I'm really considering adding it to my med regimen, and the store is part of a very reputable chain of health stores. Thanks!
