Switching to Abilify?

Posted by kotsunega on May 27, 2003, at 10:59:10

I am bipolar 1 with attention deficit disorder and have been successfully treated with 20 mg of zyprexa nightly for over three years now. There has been one drawback: It seems the zyprexa makes my ADD worse, so for that I take high doses of ritalin - 20 mg 6 x a day. The zyprexa makes me resistant to the effects of the ritalin, hence the high doses. I'm wondering about trying abilify as I read in a couple places that this atypical anti-psychotic helps relieve ADD symptoms. If so, maybe I could stop taking the ritalin, which is a hassle to get refilled monthly. I'm also interested in abilify because from what I've read, it doesn't have the sedating effect of zyprexa. I love that the zyprexa allows me to sleep good at night, but waking up and getting going again is very difficult and I tend to sleep 10-12 hours a day with zyprexa. Once I get past the morning groginess, I'm fine for the rest of the day, but I'm wondering if abilify would be any different. Any comments? Anyone else switch from zyprexa to abilify? Would like to read about your experiences if you have tried switching. Thanks!
