> My 5 yr old has tardive dyskinesia from the 17 months she was taking Respirdal. These doctors don't even know the true side effects from this drug even though they are prescribing it to a 3 yr old at the time. She was on 3mg by the 15 month mark on this drug.
To my knowlege that is an extremely high dose for such a young person.
We did not really notice any thing until she was taken off the respirdal.
I've heard of this happening- ie TD after therapy.
They put her on prozac for what they called Obsessive compulsive disorder and told us to wean her off of respirdal. The only side effect we were ever told about from the respirdal was the appetite increase and weight gain. That was it.If that is the case, take the Dr.'s in question to authorities. Extremely unethical practice (oh, hang on...it's shrinks we are talking about - most of them only know how to behave in an appaling way!) How dare they not warn you about your own daughters safety. Again and again I hear of this behaviour from them. I would reccomend seeing a GP (a normal MD) OR you might be lucky and find one of the 5% of shrinks who truly are warm and caring people. I met two after seeing/meeting/knowing about 20-25! The rest were crackers or just bad people.
The doctors did offer me one option. They told us that we could put her back on the drug that damaged her brain in the first place.
Typical! Tell the Dr. who said that to start taking Risperidone him/herself. That is an absolutely ridiculous suggestion.
You see alot of these drugs mask what it is doing to your brain until you come off the offending agent. This is not an option for us and we would really like to help her so she can enjoy being a kid again. She deserves some sort of qualitiy of life.Absolutely she does. It saddens me just to hear about this. Also it angers me.
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Mama Bear aka Tammy
Tammy, I have these suggestions...I myself was on risperidal for derealization for a short time years ago. I was 18 at the time. 2mg gave me akathisa (An EPS).
1. Benadryl - try this.
2. Continue Vitamin E high dose therapy.
3. Look up "Virtual Hospital - Tardive Dyskinesia" on search engine, for an EXCELLANT article on TD - also includes great strategies to help it.
4. Stay away from any antipsychotic treatment (you probably know this anyway) She is only OCD right? BTW, I wouldn't suggest Anafranil for her, if this comes up. Also risk (VERY slight) for TD.
I really hope it works out for you and your daughter. She does not deserve this.God Bless you...you will find a way.
Ace.
