L-tryptophan is not unsafe. Contaminated l-tryptophan is. One particular Japanese manufacturer produced highly contaminated amino acid supplements (sixty identified contaminants, at least six of which were associated with EMS). Current industrial practice is to test for these contaminants prior to the release of any shipment to market. It won't happen again.
