I have a question about the effect of Strattera on dopamine. I have seen a study which states that Strattera increases DA levels in the prefrontal cortex, and this helps relieve ADHD symptoms. But isn't Strattera's one mechanism NE reuptake inhibition? Also, I have seen studies which state that Effexor can do this as well. How do they do this? Or do TCA's do this as well? I'm asking this question because I take a TCA for ADHD and depression, and I don't want to take two drugs that do basically the same thing. Am I wrong in my assumption that a TCA would boost dopamine levels in the prefrontal cortex as well ( sharing a mechanism with Effexor and Strattera)? My pdoc assured me that Strattera has some dopaminergic action not shared by a TCA, but he implied that no one is sure about the mechanism: so Strattera may not be a truly selective NRI after all? I would appreciate all answers to this query because I'm scheduled to see him on Friday and it will likely be my last meeting with him (he doesn't accept my new insurance plan), and he seems more helpful than anyone I'd be likely to get later, so if I'm going to get a script for Strattera, it will probably be next week. Thanks in advance for any replies,
z
