I had the same problem of staying asleep with Ambien the few times I've taken it.
I do use Benadryl sometimes for help sleeping. If you're not used to it, it can be very sedating. The drowsiness really kicks in about an hour after you take it. I sometimes have allergy problems in spring and summer, so I'm not so bothered about dryness.
