I think it's contraindicated in MAOIs (I think I remember reading that in its insert online) but Provigil is generally used to offset sedation from a non-MAOI, according to my p-doc. Funny, I was aware of Provigil and its use in ADD and narcolepsy, but it never dawned on me as an augumenting agent to a drug that makes you somnolent!
Anyway, something to think about. My doc prefers augumenting than switching. In this case it was Risperdal, which he was determined in thinking was necessary for my social anxiety...
from reading his thoughts, I realized he must of saw Klonopin as some sort of pharmacological bandaid that doesn't correct the root problem. He once said "well, yeah, of course you felt relaxed on it, it dulls everything so much." I repeatedly have told him it specifically does not dull my thinking, and my thoughts are clearer on it, and even gave him literature from a psychopharma textbook that tells this.
I recently even found an abstract featuring a 6-week trial of Klonopin in social anxiety patients with a 1-year follow-up. Social anxiety was reduced 1 yr later, even though they only had 6 weeks of treatment!!
There wasn't a single underlying theory he had to my anxiety/ADD that I didn't disprove in my year and 1/2 seeing him. I'm seeing a new doc this Friday finally.
The oddest thing was that he always asked if "I wanted to focus on my ADD or anxiety" thinking if I focused on my anxiety it would cancel out my treatment of ADD. This guy's got some bizarre and unfounded theories to anxiety, and it's really stupid he has them...
anyway, Provigil good for sedation...
