In reply to GH3, DMT - natural MAO Inhibitors?, posted by Verne on April 4, 2003, at 12:35:06

The confusion probably arose because plants that contain DMT are often ingested along with plants that contain the natural MAOIs harmine, harmaline and tetrahydroharmine. DMT is not active orally unless an MAOI is present as well. Also, DMT is illegal.
So, as far natural MAOIs... there are the harmala alkaloids previously mentioned. They are contained in plants such as Syrian Rue, Yage and Passionflower.
The Yohimbe plant is a mild MAOI.
St. John's Wort is said to have VERY slight MAOI properties as well.
That's all I know of. You should note, though, that just because something is natural - doesn't mean it has no risks. The harmala alkaloids carry the same risks with them as synthetic MAOIs.
