Each eye sends information to both sides of the brain. If something is on your left it is seen by both your left and your right eye unless it is all the way at the edge of your vision. That image is sent by both eyes to the right side of your brain. Likewise, the image of things that are to your right get sent to the left side of your brain. So an eye patch that covers one eye is not going to result in stimulation to only one half of the brain. The goggles described in the various other posts work by blocking half of the visual field of both eyes (everything on your right side for instance) but I'm not sure exactly how they do that.
