I agree with John L. However, there have been a few people who did have success the second time around. As with everything, your mileage may vary.
In my opinion, if one knows that the chemical imbalance will probably occur again after stopping a med, it's just as well to stay on the med if it's not causing problems. That would not apply to folks who are experiencing depression for the first time, or it's obviously due to external causes, or something like that.
I've struggled with depression for about 35 of my 51 years, so I just stay on meds (and hope they don't poop out).
