I used it during the years I had no health insurance. I am convinced it is the only reason I survived one particularly bad period of about 3 months (I just . . . couldn't . . . function . . . .properly . . . .and would probably have gotten run over on the freeway without it.) I only had good results with the Siberian white variety. The others hurt my stomach, made me crazy, or did nothing. My current doctor endorses ginseng, but Siberian only, interestingly enough. I took two or three capsules twice per day (450 mg caps, I think), once in the am and once again around lunch. Didn't take after lunch or I didn't get to sleep before 1 am. But I am particularly sensitive to such things, YMMV. If I understand correctly, it "activates" the adrenal cycle somewhat, through some brain function (not sure which brain subsystem it influences, can't remember.) So taking it too late can cause insomnia. I would start with one capsule in the am and work up from there if you're interested in giving it a try.
Good luck! Hope this helps.
