In reply to Sam-e side effects??, posted by Optimistic on January 28, 2003, at 8:08:17
Jitteriness is a common side effect with SAM-e. Insomnia is also, but can be lessened if you do not take SAM-e after noon. I don't think that feeling tired is a typical side effect of SAM-e.
A dose of 200 mg is not enough for most people for anxiety and depression. People generally start with 400 mg, and many need 1200 to 1600 mg. It's not recomended to exceed 1600 from what I have read.
It should be taken on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. Then wait at least an hour or preferably 2 hours or more before eating. Also take B vitamins including B12 and folate.
As a side note, SAM-e is like other treatments in that it does not work for everyone. It's also very expensive.
