It started to work within a week or two. It was a profound change.
My diagnosis is major depression and social phobia. I was 15 when I started medication. I have tried Paxil, Celexa, Prozac, Zoloft, Luvox, Effexor, Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Desyrel, Nardil and Parnate
Ive taken combos of all the SSRIs with Wellbutrin, Effexor and wellbutrin, Effexor and Prozac, and Most SSRIs/Effexor/Wellbutrin/Nardil with desyrel
I've tried Xanax, Klonopin, Neurontin, Topamax, Tegretol, Zonegran, Inderal
The SSRIs worked, in the sense that they made me not depressed, but I was never happy either, and they destroyed my sex drive. Both wellbutrin SR and desyrel helped restore my libido, but I still felt like an emotionless zombie. They (SSRIs) never worked well for social anxiety.
Wellbutrin (alone) caused hives, The SR version was fine, but wasn't really effective as monotherapy
Effexor didn't work, Effexor and Prozac didnt either...and it took me a few months to stop taking Effexor (discontinuation effects)Xanax and Klonopin made me irritable, and sleepy.
I used Neurontin and Topamax for a couple of years (for epilepsy)...I have no opinion good or bad about Neurontin, except that it is very expensive, Topamax was okay, although @400mg I experienced a myriad of side-effects (you name it) Zonegran was like a sugar pill, no effects
I found significant relief from anxiety with Inderal (betablocker), and continue to take it.
Nardil was the only medication that caused a profound, positive change in my mood, and complete recovery from social phobia. It also happens to be the one medication I have taken that has little to no side-effects (besides hypotension the first few weeks)
Unfortunately, due to the production problems, I had to stop taking it. This was the end of November, I believe. At the time, I was told Nardil would be available the first week of December...it wasn't. I'm not sure of the status now. My Doc, after phoning the pharm co., was under the impression that Nardil would no longer be made, so I switched to Parnate. I have found similar results with Parnate (which im on now), although it is more stimulating, and requires an annoying 3x's/day dose.
