To rephrase the relationship in the new way, you might say the schizophrenics are six times more likely to have used marijuana than non-schizophrenics. Given the general mellowing effect normally attributed to marijuana, self-medication during the prodromal period is not at all an unreasonable inference. The prodromal period for a disorder is that period of time where the disease process is already active, but clinically diagnosable symptoms are not yet fully developed.
