Whenever correlation is found between two variables, it is a useful tactic to invert the two variables to consider the other side of the coin. To rephrase the relationship in the new way, you might say the schizophrenics are six times more likely to have used marijuana than non-schizophrenics. Given the general mellowing effect normally attributed to marijuana, self-medication during the prodromal period is not at all an unreasonable inference. The prodromal period for a disorder is that period of time where the disease process is already active, but clinically diagnosable symptoms are not yet fully developed.
