Why would effexor work for pain?

Posted by Lia Mason on December 18, 2002, at 22:01:44

Hi,

I've posted my saga before. I have a chronic vaginal pain condition called vulvodynia. The treatments of choice are anti-depressants and anticonvulsants. I couldn't tolerate neurontin and i made some improvement on imipramine, but not enough. When I saw my doc today he announced the "good" news that a pain doc in Maryland is having great results treating vulvodynia with effexor. I would love to beat this pain, but I've taken effexor for depression and it wiped out my sexuality. Completely. It seems to me just trading one problem for another. So I'm wondering... if effexor works for this, what else might. Is the mechanism of effexor THAT unique? Could I mimic it with another combo that wouldn't cause sexual dysfunction?
