As an augment (when taken in addition to an antidepressant) for unipolar depression, the best dose seemed to be about 1 gr/day of pure EPA. Now, you're going to have to pay dearly to get just pure EPA, as used in that study. Fish oil contains 180 mg in each capsule. So you need to take 5-6 each day, giving you 900-1080 mg/day of EPA, but also some DHA (a major constituent of brain tissue).
It looks like that would be the maintenance dose.
Dr. Stoll did some work with bipolars, giving them a wopping 9.6 grams each day of omega-3s. This might suggest that acute treatment (short-term and intense to deal with major symptoms) can be considerably higher. So, maybe for a week or two, a higher dose might be beneficial. There is a risk, however, that you will induce a metabolic pathway for the use of polyunsaturated fatty acids for energy production (called beta-oxidation). That would just waste the fish oil.
It's best to look at fish oil as a life-long dietary measure.
> My husband is taking "Spring Valley's - Natural Fish Oil Concentrate - with Omega 3 fatty acids" - HOWEVER -
Walmart house brand....seems to a good quality oil, based on the fish-burp index.
> As I scan your articles I can't make heads nor tails of the recommended dosage - it states 3 g/d.
That's a lot of fish oil, if it's meant to indicate the amount of omega-3 fatty acids (16 or 17 caps a day), but much less if it means fish oil itself (three caps a day). You really need to be clear on what they're talking about. EPA, DHA, or both? Or just fish oil.
