Melatonin will not cause weight gain, bloatedness, or constipation.

Melatonin is a key modulator of the immune system, and also has a regulatory role on reproductive cycling. There is some evidence that melatonin can lower the seizure threshold in those prone to epileptic disorders.

Melatonin is one of the most powerful antioxidants yet discovered, and as it readily crosses the blood-brain barrier, may protect the brain against oxidative stress.

Concerns about using melatonin supplements center on two themes, dose and duration. It is not recommended that a single dose exceeds 5 mg. Doses as low as 0.5 mg are effective for some people. It is not recommended that melatonin supplementation exceeds 2 weeks duration, except under medical supervision, due to the activation of the immune and hemopoetic(blood cell synthesis) functions. Alternating periods of use with rest periods of equal duration is probably safe.
