I got the shakes for a day when I stopped taking vikodin after 4 weeks, as prescribed. I also had the chills. Felt like a heroin addict.
It's probably one or more of the drugs you're coming off from, most likely alcohol and/or xanax, since these both leave the bloodstream quickly enough to frazzle your CNS once it starts missing their old buddies.
Clonidine is frequently used in alcohol withdrawl, and certainly for shaking regardless of the cause. I'd probably try it over Inderal, since it's just more widely used for the purpose you're talking about. You can use it in a patch or in a pill. It'll definitely work, as long as you get the dose right. Beta blockers can be tricky because they contraindicate themselves in lots of meds. Clonidine accomplishes the same thing, basically, but is an alpha blocker.
Dilantin is well-established for alcohol withdrawl as well, although your doctor would probably be more comfortable using cetapres... read my post for information on getting a free copy of a book that contains these study abstracts.
