Depakote is a 50:50 mixture of valproic acid and sodium valproate. It's got slightly different pharmacokinetics to valproate or valproic acid and seems to be slightly better tolerated, chiefly because of fewer gastro-intestinal side-effects. I haven't seen much evidence that there's any advantage to taking it instead of valproate or valproic acid on their own, apart from tolerability. Incidentally, it's five times the price of generic valproate, at least in the UK.
