Are you hoping to lose weight or are you worried about keeping your weight on?
I haven't really found that stimulants have caused weight loss in me, but then I never found any anti-depressants (especially SSRIs) caused weight gain for me.
If you'd like to lose weight on a stimulant (but hopefully you're not planning on taking it just for that reason), its main effect would be to make you more awake & alive & therefore more active. It's the activity that will cause weight loss. It would also work if you were to take it before you ate, muting your hunger & appetite. But that's not a good idea as a good appetite is neeeded to eat properly. I suppose it depends on how much you normally eat. Changing possible unhealthy eating habits would be better (assuming you may have some).
Now if you don't wish to lose weight, better to eat your meal first, then take your stimulant. It'll take a little longer to be absorbed but will still reach its full effect, but without hindering your appetite or food intake.
I've taken Ritalin & Dexedrine & found no difference in appetite suppression. Provigil doesn't affect my appetite in the least, either.
