combination of ritalin, neurontin and effexor?

Posted by marge on November 1, 2002, at 18:59:29

I am taking ritalin for narcolepsy (a sleep disorder), neurontin for restless legs syndrome (another sleep disorder), and effexor for cataplexy (a subset of narcolepsy) and depression. All three drugs work on chemicals in the brain, but each on a different chemical (except for effexor which works on two chemicals). The effexor is prescribed by a psychiatrist and the ritalin and neurontin by a neurologist. Both doctors keep each other and my GP informed about medication, etc.

This regime of medications has worked pretty well for a year or so, but now I'm having problems - increased depression, more "twitchiness" which I assume is related to the restless legs syndrome, fatigue, lack of focus.

The psychiatrist (who mostly just prescribes drugs - he's our resident expert on psychotropic (is that the right word?) drugs) told me that there are no known adverse drug interactions, and no reason to expect there to be any adverse drug interactions. He said that the only interaction might be that each drug might boost the effectiveness of the others. However, he has never treated anyone with all three drugs, and agrees that the three have probably not been tested together.

Has anyone else been on all three of these drugs at the same time? If so, what was your
experience?

Thanks.
