Depakote, valproate, valproic acid

Posted by Larry Hoover on October 27, 2002, at 10:45:00

I was looking at the various reasons that folate is essential to health, and
I came across a link between valproic acid and functional folate deficiency.
You can have a healthy intake of folate, yet be unable to utilize it
properly, if you use valproic acid. Moreover, there are genetic influences
on folate metabolism which are made more serious if taking valproic acid.
Just another reason to be sure that you get enough B-vitamins.

The topic is complications of pregnancy, but the explanations are quite
readable, and have broader application.
