Hi..from what I've read, it is still considered pretty safe to take two years of HRT to ease the transition into menopause, unless you have specific elevated risk factors. The symptoms which can be helped do include depression and lowered libido, in addition to hot flashes, etc. If you look up "depression" and "estrogen" on one of the search engines like Medline, you'll find some associations, with estrogen definitely having an antidepressant action for some women.
Some gynecologists, such as mine, prefer using Ogen, a plant-derived estrogen related to soy, rather than Premarin, along with Provera. Also, they sometimes give it on an every-other-day basis.
